The Importance of Herb Testing

The Importance of Herb Testing

We take great pride in the quality of the herbs used in 5 Point Detox. This is vitally important because if the herbs are contaminated or of the wrong subspecies then not only will the product not work but may have an adverse effect.
One way we ensure the herbs in each batch are correct is to send a sample of every batch to Southern Cross University’s Plant Science Analytical Research Laboratory to perform High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). HPLC is a technique in analytical chemistry used to separate, identify, and quantify each component in a mixture. This is expensive but it is the only way to determine if the correct plant is being used and if there are any contaminants present.
After many years of tests showing no issues, we recently had a failure on a new batch of Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) herb which we sourced through our normal supply channel. While the HPLC testing confirmed that there were no contaminates in the herb extract it did show that the herb was of the wrong subspecies – Valeriana edulis. This means that even though the herb was the right species because it was a different sub-species it lacked the necessary component (valerenic acid) needed to calm the digestive system. Here are the results:

As a result of this failed test, the herbs were rejected and manufacturing was delayed until new Valerian was sourced that passed the testing process.
